Not all suffering is actually that bad. For example, if a volcano has erupted some people will say that it could kill people or cause suffering, but for those who live it is actually helpful, because it will fertilize the soil to grow good crops, therefore meaning they will get good food instead of starving. So basically suffering can be helpful, and this is only one example of many.

Answer:

Suffering drives all positive change. If things did not involve pain, unhappiness, dissatisfaction and all the other myriad presentations of suffering there wjould be no need for improvement.

If there were no suffering as a counterpoint to happiness ther would be no way to know if things were good or bad. Like the lotus eaters of Greek mythology, who passed their drugged lives in pointless apathy, there would be no goals or progress - a waste of their existence.

By suffering, you can understand what none others have. It gives yourself either restraint orbrain-damage. But I wouldn't really perfer suffrage over much. If there is a way to get out of it, you should. Live the life you want unless it affects others in a bad way. Well, The Bible teaches the principle that good can come out of suffering. . Sometimes it may be necessary to a greater good . History seems to add its affirmation to this principle. Unfortunately, its not something that most people want to believe, this writer included.

This life was never meant to be a walk in the park. People are meant to invest hard effort in this world (see Job 5:7), and suffering is a factor which should assist us in gaining understanding.

Suffering teaches us:

  • our mistakes (Genesis 42:22)
  • to repent
  • that we are not all-powerful or in control
  • that this life is not meant to be uninterrupted pleasure
  • to have sympathy for sufferers (Exodus 23:9)
  • humility; maturity; acceptance; fortitude.

Also, when viewed in the context of the afterlife, when worthy people who suffered may be recompensed and the prosperous wicked will have the opposite, the apparent injustices of this world become easier to understand.

What is a Buddhist explanation of suffering?

Suffering is a disturbance or irritation of the mindstream. It is an obscuration of the mind, or essence of a person, or, if you will, the soul. The opposite of suffering in Buddhist epistemology is not really happiness or even the cessation of suffering, but freedom from the polarizing concept that causes us to be attracted to some things and averse to others. Suffering is thought to be the result of confused thinking. People think that to be happy, they need to grasp at those things that they think will bring them pleasure. We are very attached to this idea; that having what we want will bring us happiness. It is actually that grasping, that attachment that causes suffering.
