It depends on how old the child is. The beginning has sexual content, and some of the plot could be scary for a younger kid. It would be a good idea to read Wicked before desiding to let your child read it. It is a very good book for teenagers.
No, the musical "Wicked" is not an inappropriate play.
Specifically, the musical tells the story of Elphaba Thropp, who becomes known as the Wicked Witch of the West. Because she is green-skinned and has principles, Elphaba faces a lot of challenges and is treated as the unpopular girl on campus. But she persists in her beliefs and ultimately finds personal and professional happiness.
The book "Wicked" by Gregory Maguire is a very difficult book to read. There are parts in the book that are inappropriate for kids, yes. Ex: Munchkins and other fictional characters having sex etc, some mild language, and violence.
For adults, its a great read.
Kids: Heck no.
Yes, and no. The novel 'Wicked' by Gregory Maguire [b. June 9, 1954] isn't appropriate for children. But the musical of the same name that's based on Maguire's novel is acceptable for young readers and young viewers. In fact, it's popular with the younger audiences of 10 years old and above. No child who is younger than four years old is admitted to any performances. Children 4-10 years in age respond well to the story if, in the case of the musical, they hear the music before going to a performance.
Probably children form 8 years old onwards - otherwise it is just way too confusing for them! :)
It is appropriate but I wouldn't suggest wasting money on children under 12 to go to it. Broadway tickets aren't cheap and young children wouldn't understand it

You can read the novel the musical was based on Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. But be warned that the book is very different to the musical, with dark themes and adult content.
