Dr. Who has always been, to my knowledge, a male character. However in Science Fiction, there have been female doctors- for example Dr. Venus who was the sidekick of Steve Zodiac in Fireball XL5. Dr. Who has always, to my knowledge, been a man. There was a female doctor ( bespectacled, as one might guess) in the now-historical comic strip, The Spirit, which was drawn by Will Eisner. She was not a lead character but did figure in some episodes.
