Start by looking at it from Matthew's point of view...

If his only sister was Jennifer then he would have: 1 sister (Jennifer)

You are told in the question that he has one more brother than he has sisters. So if he has 1 sister, then he must have: 2 brothers (Let's call them David and Charlie)

With me so far?

If this were true then from Jennifer's point of view she would have:

0 sisters (she is the only girl)

3 brothers (Matthew, David and Charlie)

This means she has... how many more brothers than sisters? It should be clear now, so I'm not going to tell you! :-)

If you go back to the start and imagine that Matthew has 2 sisters (Jennifer plus another) and you follow through the workings out again you will still get the same answer. It might help you to draw some 'stickmen' as Jennifer and Matthew and any other brothers and sisters, then they will be very easy to count up. Before you know it you'll have the hang of these problems and you'll be able to solve them in your head!

Good luck! 4 sis 1 bro
