During the time of Jesus, some of the significant political, social, and religious groups in the region included the Pharisees, who emphasized strict adherence to Jewish law; the Sadducees, who were more conservative and focused on the Temple cult; the Essenes, an ascetic Jewish sect who lived communally and awaited the arrival of a Messiah; and the Zealots, who advocated for the violent overthrow of Roman rule. These groups each had distinct beliefs and practices that influenced the social and religious landscape of the time.

Social Groups

Ð The poor

This is the lowest status you can achieve. These people have no dignity and rely on others mercy to survive. They're economically deprived.

Ð The diseased

The diseased were often economically deprived due to lack of work because of society's belief that the diseased were this way because they had evil spirits inside of them. These people can vary from those with mental illnesses, paralysis, speech impairments, epilepsy, deaf, dumb and those with skin conditions. Often they contracted disease from having no money and not being able to look after their health.

Ð The Sinners

The unfaithful people who didn't follow Hebrew laws or didn't behave appropriately. If you were to associate with these outcasts you were looked down upon. Some examples of include-

*Prostitutes

*Tax collectors

*Publicans (owners of bars)

*Robbers

*Herdsman

*Gamblers

*Those who didn't pay tithes to priests

*Ritually unclean

*uneducated, Unclean

*Those who didn't observe the Sabbath day of rest.

Tax Collectors

Tax collectors were considered to be traitors because they not only took money off struggling people but it

Ð was for the opposing threat that they gave it to. The Pharisees disliked the tax collectors very much.

Ð Samaritans

These people were inhabitants of Samaria. They built their own temple. Samaritan was essentially a religion. The Jews and Samaritans were very ill-at-ease with each other.

Ð Farmers

I could not find any information to suggest that the farmers were nothing other then what the title suggests.

Ð Artisans

Artisans is a Latin word which means, 'good with hands' and basically they are artists or sculptors.

Political Groups

Ð Sadducees

these groups was rich and powerful and were a Jewish religious group who controlled the temple of Sanhedrin, the ruling Jewish council. From their ranks, Temple priests were chosen. Their power opposed their popularity with most other Jews. The others mistrusted and disliked the Sadducees however they were on friendly terms with the Romans.

Ð Pharisees

These men were an important religious group at the time of Jesus. The word means "separated ones". They were ordinary Jewish men who were devoted to the religion. There were some scribes and holy men amongst this group. They controlled the synagog and were described to be preoccupied with purity.

Ð Scribes

Sometimes referred to as 'lawyers' these people were highly educated in law which they copied and interpreted in detail. They also taught others and reproduced ancient texts.

Ð Zealots

The term Zealots is connected with people that believe in something so strongly they're willing to die for their belief. The Zealots at the time of Jesus were the Jews that hated the Romans. It is believed that Simon, one of Jesus' disciples had been a member of this group.

Ð Herodians

This group were friends and supporters of Herod Antipas. Herod Antipas was a Jewish leader, ruler of Galilee and Parea between 4BC and 39CE. Antipas was the son of 'Harold the great' who was a Jewish King. This party was not an organized group.

Ð Essenes

The Essenes were an extremely religious group. They lived in communities away from ordinary people. People in a normal society took some of their rules and dulled them down to be acceptable. To become an Essene you would have a 3 year probationary period.

Ironically, doing a project on this at the moment.

*note- the information may not be correct as I've put it together on my opinion.

What other religious groups say about Mormons?

It depends on the religious group. Of course no religious group says that another group is the one true religion, and some groups are more open and welcoming than others. Many religious groups say that Mormonism is full of good people that are misguided. Others will say that they are Christians that incorrectly interpret some verses of scripture. Many groups are willing to side with Mormons on social issues but do not approve of their doctrine. Still, there are many who say less kind things - it is quite common for religious groups to say that Mormons, despite their belief in Jesus Christ, are not really Christian. Even less kind, more than one denomination has released an official statement saying that Mormonism is a "Satanic cult". Generally though, most religions view most other religions as "good but not correct".
