I have a 3 month old son who doesn't make much eye contact as well. He started making some eye contact a few days after he turned 3 months old. Before this, he NEVER made eye contact nor looked at objects when I put it in front of his face. I took him to a ped and he thought he might be blind and told me to go to an eye dr. I ended up going to 2 eye drs and they both said they didn't see any problems with his eyes. I had another ped take a look at him and he said that he defintely lacks in eye contact - he told me most kids this age will look at faces more. However, he told me that he is probably just delayed and told me to wait a month (until he turns 4 months). I had a ped neorologist (my son was 3 months 2 days old) and she said the same thing, that he definitely lacks in eye contact, but said it's way too early to tell if it is autism. She told me to wait 2 months and watch his overall development. She did tell me that she has seen children at 3 and even 4 months who have poor eye contact who end up being normal - some children are just delayed. My son is developing normally in every other way, he smiles, laughs, coos and babbles. He just learned to roll over from back to stomach and loves to grab things that are in his reach - especially his blanket. He still lacks in eye contact but has shown improvement. Like I said before - he never looked at me until after he turned 3 months old, but even now it's still not perfect. When I try to get him to look at me he will still turn away a lot, or when we are outside he would rather see what is going on around him. He will only make eye contact with me sometimes, like when I am siting next to him or standing over him. Sometimes he will track me a little across the room. He looks at my husband more than at me.

I hope my story helped because I totally understand where you are coming from, and I am still worried about my son's eye development. I would tell you to just wait and see. Look and see how she is in a month. Don't worry about autism because it cannot be diagnosed this early. You have to watch your child's overall development. I'm sure she is fine!

Is 48 too high for a four month old baby's respiratory rate?

It depends a little on if the baby is active or not. Various sources, including Wikipedia, cite 25-50 breaths a minute. Your doctor should be consulted if you are concerned, and especially if the rate is at that level when the baby is not especially active, or if there are other symptoms.
