You should always save the passport before the one you have now, just in case you lose it and need a new one, this will speed the process up.

Do Not Throw Away Expired Passports?

If you throw away your expired passports, you will just have to do a lot more paperwork the next time that you decide to get a new passport. You will have to fill out a form that tells the government that you have lost the passport and that you do not know where it is. If you keep it, you can simply give it to the agent when you order the new passport and it will be taken care of.

Is there a way for an adult with a valid passport to travel with a thirteen year old with an expired passport to Ireland?

It is not ok to travel on an expired passport. Why? because even though the country you want to enter accepts expired passports (which there is no such country), the airline will not allow you to board the aircraft. So, always make sure you have a valid passport and proper visa, if you need one, well before your departure date.It does not matter if you are a new born or a 97 year old senior- you should have a valid passport to travel outside your country.
