There are many points both for and against health care reform. This is based purely upon opinion. Many people will say many different things. A better question to ask would be, "what are some reasons health care should be reformed" or something to that effect. (?)
Answer:
Healthcare legislation should be DEFORMED. Too much legislation and regulation is why healthcare is consistently becoming more and more expensive. A national overhaul of healthcare will be much too costly, and will be the straw that broke the camel's back that is the US dollar. It will devastate our nation. Healthcare is the only field where technology has not reduced costs, this is because of over regulation, too much government involvement, and too many bureaucrats. Let freedom ring, and let the free market fix the problem. Liberty works if it isn't strangled by government.
Answer:
I don't understand where the previous answerer might have gotten information from, but it certainly doesn't bear much resemblance to the actual current healthcare situation. Except for Medicare, which has a pretty transparent bureaucracy, the government has very little involvement in the current healthcare system. The current healthcare system is driven and regulated by private and non-profit insurance companies; the difference is that private companies make huge profits while non-profit companies accumulate huge "surpluses" since they're not allowed to make profits.
The bureaucrats in the health system are insurance company employees who slow down healthcare and make it more expensive by generating vast amounts of paperwork, and insisting on unnecessary tests. Hospitals and doctors have to hire their own bureaucrats to fill out and return all of the paperwork from the insurance company bureaucrats. The "free market" doesn't care that they are the cause of rising costs; no problem, they can raise their rates any time they wish. Like the huge crash of the "too big to fail" banks, the problem is a lack of effective regulation. I wish it was true that "Liberty works". Unfortunately in the 21st century marketplace Liberty Breeds Greed.
We are right now about as close to a "Free Market" as we can get in healthcare. In 60 years, what has the "Free Market" done about the 36 million (and growing) uninsured Americans? The idea that the "Free Market" is suddenly going to reform itself and do what's right for our society is a fairy tale.
