In general, FDA and AABB guidelines allow volunteer blood donations if someone is 17 years of age or older, weigh 100 lbs or more, and are in good health. Specific eligibility questions must be answered, a mini-physical preformed, and the prospective donor must have a blood count of 38% or higher (or a hemoglobin of 12.5 or greater). Specific criteria may be found at AABB.org.

What is done with your blood after donation?

First of all, when you go for donating your blood you have to first undergo some medical checkups in order to prove yourself eligible to donate blood. When you donate blood after a certain period of time, your cells start regenerating and the amount you donated regenerates in the body and in this way you can again donate the blood after a period of three months or so, as soon as the blood regenerates and you stay healthy.

How often can one donate blood?

At the place I go to, (ZLB Plasma Services) you have to wait 58 days before they will let you donate plasma. This is because they want you to have enough whole blood to be able to keep you healthy after you donate plasma. It will keep you from getting sick from losing too much good stuff your body needs.
