The same place can be "discovered" by many people if they didn't know about it. In the case of North America, there were already people here, and several separate groups "discovered" America over the course of several centuries. Chinese mariners had landed in what is now California in the 1400s, and on the European side, both the Irish and the Vikings had made it to North America before Columbus did.
Columbus gets credit for sharing the word of his discoveries with the world, which no one before him had done.

On christopher Columbus's 1st voyage he landed in the Americas which he thought was India
Yes, Christopher Columbus discovered America and the Native Americans living on it. The above answer is partly wrong but I am going to put the correct answer below it and give some interesting facts..... When Columbus set sail across the world he went the wrong way. So, when he hit the piece of land that we know was a America (it wasnt called America back then) he actually thought it was India and so when he saw the black people living there (who were the native Americans) he called them the Indians which is why the native Americans are also known as the Red Indians. Columbus did only discover the Indians because he thought he had reached India and America didnt even exist back when he travelled. America was discovered when Europeans started to move there making the journey west and they called it 'America' and took over the land by driving the Indians away. People have been making mistakes for years thinking that Columbus discovered America when infact he had only discovered the people living upon it because as I just said he thought he was in the country India because he went the wrong way. I hope this has answered your question.
