A record label will contact you if you are good enough. Back in the day you would be able to record a demo and send it to labels. Now however, everyone can record a demo on their computer. Labels these days are constantly being sent really bad demos and thus, they don't even listen to them. Make your own albums, and play your own shows. If you are successful the labels will hear about it and come find you. If you go out and try to contact them all the time, you will be turned down.

try making a profile on MySpace or something. A lot of bands were discovered there. Also, some record labels will allow you to contact them and give them a link to your MySpace profile and they will listen to your demo and let you know if they like it or not.
