This was handled very discretely in the movie, but a "rear echelon" assignment, and even the theme song ( sentimental journey), reflects this might be looked upon as a blessing to war-weary gobs
Why was Lt. Roberts so gung-ho to get off the ship? One notices the captain had no love interests or even 5X7" photos in his quarters, and he was extremely possessive of Lt. Roberts
In looking at all the applied and suggested facts, he may have made advances to the Lieutenant (off camera, of course), and he would have been in big trouble if found out.
