That is why he is called Leonardo of Vinci ( the name of the town he was from). He grew up in a time of great upheavals and danger as well. At 16 he is sent to be an apprentice in an artist workshop and begins to learn the arts that will dominate his life. At age 23 he is arrested and accused of seducing a male prostitute. He is cleared due to the lack of a witness, but he could have ended up in prison. All of his life he was poor and was supported by rich sponsors . He never married, nor had children. He died in France.
