It was based on the book Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, which was set during the timeframe of the June Rebellions in France. No such man like Jean Valjean existed; he and all the other characters were pure fiction. However, the June Rebellions did take place and were pretty miserable failures, and so that part of the movie was based on truth.

While Les Misérables takes place during the same time period as the French Revolution, it is not directly based on it. The novel by Victor Hugo focuses more on themes of justice, redemption, and the struggles of the underprivileged in French society.

He publish his work in 1862 and the French Revolution did not explode until the 1880's.

∙ 10y agoNo it's not a true story. It does however take place after France had their revolutionary war, and times where very hard. So it's bassed on a true "setting," but the story is made up.
