I would have to say that it was a compliment more than anything as there was no serious attempt made to criticize on any particular philosophy of the book. The movie was just 'good fun', a rather well executed farce of a famous story. Gene Wilder's particular brand of over-acting was 'well restrained' so it was 'more dramatically credible' than his usual noisy rantings.
