I wasn't there at the time, but I would say that footwear was created on purpose. Archaeologists have found evidence that early humans learned to wrap their feet in bark, grasses, and animal skins bound with strips of leather and other natural materials. As humans do, they improved upon each method for covering their feet by trimming, tailoring, and improving the combination of materials, the fit, the wearability and durability. Humans living (and walking) in different climates and terrain made improvements suitable to their own needs. The process has not stopped; right up until today, innovations are still being made.
