Dobermans were originally breed from German Pinschers, Rottweilers, Beauceron, Pinschers, Greyhounds, English GreayhoundsThe origin of the Doberman Pincher isn't completely traceable. It is thought that dobermans are bread from German Pinchers (very smart breed), German Herd Dogs, Great Danes, and Rottweilers. Of course without knowing for sure, there can be all kinds of combinations. I have 2 dobermans now, and have had 2 others (separate times) in the past. Through my personal research, I find these breeds to be most consistently mentioned in literature about dobermans. - also the breed has changed since it's arrival to America after WWII.

True hyperactivity in dobermans is actually rare. Most people who get a doberman expect them to lay and guard all day. However, this is a false representation of the breed that has been promoted by the mass media. Dobermans, especially when young, are a highly active breed. If you feel that your doberman is hyperactive, you might want to consult a behaviorist first. Your vet will probably know a few good ones in the area. The behaviorist will be able to tell if the activity level is normal for the breed and age of the dog, or if there is a true medical issue. If a medical issue is found, medications from the vet may help to calm the dog down. However, the problem is more than likely due to the age and breed of the dog. They may simply grow out of it. Obedience training can help too.
