Depends on what you mean by "look like they are in space" and the quality of work you expect to produce.
Photoshop or any other photo editing program that has layers and a path tool or masking (like GIMP or Paint Shop Pro) can allow you to cut a subject out and composite it with a photo of outer space (or anything else you want). Cutting out a subject from a busy background takes time and practice.
The photo booth app on a mac will let you do background substitution fairly easily, although it doesn't always work well, and even when it works the results aren't very realistic. You have to take a picture of the background first, and then of the subject without moving the camera.
If you want a photo on a black background so it looks like they're floating, this can be achieved in camera with proper lighting technique. Put your subject as far away from the (black/dark) background as possible, and use a directional light source that only shines on the subject and not the background. An image shot this way is fairly easy to cut out and composite.
You can also use a projector to project a space photo on a white backdrop and then carefully balance the lighting on your subject with the projected background. This takes practice and proper lighting equipment.
It makes the person look like something to be feared.
Photos printed from any "photo quality" printer on glossy photo paper will look like a real photograph.

You mainly want to take a look at the megapixels. When you are printing only 4x6 inch photos you can use just about any standard camera. When you are wanting to print out larger photos, like 8x10 and bigger, you will want the better cameras with the better resolutions and higher megapixels.
