Extreme environments (which still support life) can cover a number of different situations. In gemeral they are environments different from our normal atmospheric temperature and pressure or filled with toxic compounds and or radiation. These include:

  • Desertd (extreme lack of water)
  • Exreme cold (Antartica)
  • Fissures in deep rocks several kilometers below the ground (no oxygen, sunlight and very hot)
  • On sea bottoms (extreme pressure_
  • Acid ponds (extreme low pH)
  • Rodiation )bacteria grow in cooling wayer tanks in reactors)
  • Near black smokers (volcanic underwater vents where the only "food" is sulfite)
  • In mine drainageeating sulfates and sulfides
  • In brewers vats (no oxygen)
  • In human intestines (high pH)
  • The vacuum of outer space (some spores and bacteria can stand this)
