-Reddish brown plumage streaked with darker brown and a white face

-Only called when flying. Heard mainly on dark, drizzly nights or preceding rain

-Male generally smaller than female (like most owls)

-Last sighting was in 1914 and the owl was deceased

-Preferred open country for hunting, and rocky areas for shelter and the rocky areas of the Southern Apls were very much suited to its needs. These places showed a preference for low rainfall.

-Fed on lizards, insects, and small birds

-Ground feeder with sturdy legs which could run prey down

-Nesting was generally on bare ground and in rocky crevices. Nests were made of gay grass

The Laughing Owl Was Actually Most Likely To Eat Insects Such As Ants, Beetles, Bees, Wasps And Other Insects. They Also Possibly On Occasions Ate Rodents, Lizards And On Extreme Occasions Probably Ate Other Birds, Snakes And Fish.
