A flood plain is a flat land bordering a river made up of alluvium (clay, sand and silt) deposited during floods. When a river overflows, the floodplain is covered with water. Hope this helps :)

A flood is any great amount of water where it is not wanted. Usually created by heavy rainfall, where the drains do not have the capacity to hold. other things can created by storms, cyclones, tsunamis. Flash floods are slightly different, they happen quickly mainly because of the mountain lanscape like makes the water rush in really quick, alternatively, alot of rainfall comes in a short amount of time.

These days, most floods are caused by the rising sea levels, they are rising because of the polar ice caps melting, as a direct result of Global Warming.
