The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (ODEQ) has established water quality standards to protect these beneficial uses. The standards, based on supporting the various beneficial uses, determine the acceptable levels or ranges for water quality parameters, including temperature, dissolved oxygen, and pH. Water quality standards set by ODEQ are reviewed and updated every three years. ODEQ and others monitor water quality parameters in streams and other waterbodies throughout Oregon. Waterbodies that are not within the standards are listed as "water quality impaired." The list of impaired streams is called the "303(d) list," after section 303(d) of the 1972 Clean Water Act. # 303D streams in Umpqua Basin and # in entire state.

Two of the major factors for river pollution are: Factories- many factories throw their waste straight into the ocean/rivers nearby. It is obviously cheaper and easier for them to throw the waste rather than recycle/figure a solution (and there are many) that will not pollute and destroy. Oil- Oil is another factor that we tend to find in a high position when talking about pollution. Once again, as a result of factories, massive production, human's waste, car's waste etc, oil slicks are found in rivers and seas, polluting and destroying their natural form, pattern and most importantly the lives of the creatures that might live in there.

The things that contribute to water pollution in the region are things such as oil spills. Once they get in the water it gets contaminated. Air pollution effects the water also.
