Best Answer

To carry out a preliminary examination of the date so as to discover whether or not there is any relationship between the two variables plotted, and to provide an indication of the nature of that relationship (linear, polynomial, quadratic etc). Also to get an indication of how well the data correspond to the relationship (the variability around the curve of best fit).
