Many things can cause a sore tongue. Check to see if there are inflamed taste buds. This can be caused from something such as eating or drinking something that was too hot or too cold. This can also be caused by bacteria. Many people actually suck their tongue in their sleep and this can cause a sore tongue. In any case, good oral hygiene over-the-counter mouth rinses that restore balance in oral cavity will help. Don't use anything strong such as Listerine unless it is diluted. You could also try a mouth guard when you sleep for a few days and see if that's the problem. If its white and coated you could have thrush and need nystatin swish and swallow from your doctor. Vitamin deficiencies can also cause sore tongues so try some vitamin c or Emergen-c powder drinks.

I'm not a Doctor, but, I'm assuming that your sore is probably an open wound and is causing a fair amount of pain. If I am right, it's a canker sore. Canker sores can be brought on by stress, sudden diet changes and even light trauma such as biting your cheek. Use salt water to rinse out your mouth and it should be gone in about a week depending on size.
