By "most famous," I assume that you mean the most populated city. In that case, the most populated city is Charlotte, NC. Raleigh, NC (the capital) takes 2nd place.

The most famous city in North Carolina is Mount Airy, but you wouldn't call it that if you didn't live in NC. You know it as "Mayberry." It's where Andy Griffith grew up, it's the place he modeled Mayberry after, and they're very proud of their small-town charms.

You have seen one of the Andy Griffith shows, like Mayberry RFD or The Andy Griffith Show. Remember the Snappy Lunch? It was there before Andy was born. Remember Wally's Service Station? I don't know if they called it that when Andy lived there, but it's a real gas station opened in the 1920s.

I don't know if you want to call Mount Airy a "city," though. It's more of a "small town."
