Well, its a tough question to answer. All of his pieces have a tremendous technical showdown and musical intricacy. I know on many boards and forums, people may disagree with the latter quality I mentioned. Its just that you need a good ear to catch those fast line to appreciate his music. You can give a try to following pieces. Solo/Instrumentals: Black Star, Far Beyond the Sun, Icarus Dream Suite Op.4, Trilogy Suite, All of his pieces with Japan Philharmonic, Blitzkrieg, Caprici Diablo, Heavy Heart, Crying, Sky Euphoria, Marching Out, Overture 1622 etc. Rock Ballads/Songs: Forever One, I'll see the light tonite, 7th Sign, I'd die without you, Bad Blood, Priest of the Unholy, Russian Roulette, etc. Guest Works: Blood of the Snake (Album by Deren Shernian) Covers : Dream On (with Ronnie J. He does have an ego. He referred to other guitarists (bar Blackmore and Hendrix) very disparagingly and to other band members as vastly inferior talents.A good quotation to illustrate it is Joe Lynn Turner's (he worked with Malmsteen for a couple of albums, and he had worked with Malmsteen's hero Ritchie Blackmore who also had a sizeable ego). He said, 'Malmsteen and I broke up for religious reasons. He thought he was God and I didn't agree.'

He's not, Watching Yngwie Malmsteen play is a lot like watching a Car Race, its entertaining, but when you listen to it, it sounds about the Same. There reaches a point where sweep picking and hammer ons become overused, and become hutches. When it comes to players like Danny Gatton and Joe pass, it takes a lot more feel and musical intelligence. When you go on say youtube, and you were to look up covers of Yngwie malmsteen, you could fine 1000 good covers, because all it would take is a relaxed wrist. If you were to look up Joe pass or Danny Gatton, you would find little to no good covers, because it takes much more technique, much more thought and a lot less muscle memory, and more muscle anticipation. It takes a lot more then a Heavy back track and some pentatonic or Lydian scales.
