Best Answer

The primary advantage is that an online exam portal can be setup to automatically grade responses and the primary disadvantage is that the best answer may not be the right answer.

My local college has such a portal and its great when test results are immediately posted for test-taker viewing. I took a final last week and got a multiple choice question incorrect on comparing 'current' white men's and white women's earnings as a percentage by choosing 80% as being closest to numbers in a Institute for Women's Policy 2006 report of 77%. It was marked incorrect as they were looking for the 70% value in a 2004 report published in a book printed in 2009.

Other Advantages:

  • Can be easily accessed 24/7 over the open test period
  • Can be timed to allow Y minutes to answer X number of questions
  • Immediate test feedback when a test is submitted
  • Can take advantage of special media; video, audio, or pictures
  • Can contain a combination of True/False, multiple choice, and in some cases essay questions
Other Disadvantages:
  • Highly dependent on honor system; hard to catch cheating. A group of students can take turns taking test first to share answers with others in the group raising their overall grade.
  • Hard or difficult to ask questions or contest answers
  • Can be slow responding due to connection speed (i.e., dial-up would limit the use of graphics or media files)

In terms of the degree itself, there is no difference. Whether taking ground course work (attending a campus) or online, the degree is the same, valid, and bona-fide, provided you take the degree through a college or university

Advantages

  • It is great for an individual who cannot take ground courses because of work-life issues. In other words, time constraints, work schedule and/or family responsibilities etc.
  • The ability to work in the comfort of your own home, from work, on vacation, or any area where you have computer access.
  • The ability to work out your own study schedule and class participation.
  • You will have the opportunity to get national and global perspectives on course content issues, because there will be students in your class who are from across the nation, and some from outside the US.

Disadvantages

  • You may not have answers to questions from professors and/or classmates in real time.
  • If you are not disciplined in your study habits, it is easy to fall behind.
  • If the student is not a self starter, this approach to education would not be suitable.

Once again, when choosing a college or university, make sure the institution holds a regional accreditation (most important).
