The climate of Minnesota is quite varied, with some of the most extreme range of highs and lows found in the US. The summer climate is similar to that of southern Illinois, but with less tornadic activity. Summers can be hot, up to 105 degrees F, but usually highs just reach the mid-90's during heat waves. One reason for this, even though Minnesota is high in latitude, may be its proximity west of the Great Lakes. In stark contrast to summer, however, the Minnesota winter is known for its bitter cold, reaching lows of 20 degrees or more below zero F, before including a wind-chill factor which can drop the perceived temperature another 10 degrees. On the bright side, winters are so cold that snow seldom melts and refreezes on car windshields, so one can easily brush off windows without having to scrape. These extremes combine to provide a temperature range of over 120 degrees F!
The Coen brothers of movie fame (they produced the film "Fargo") have affectionately referred to the state as "Siberia with family restaurants." Others jokingly claim the state only has two seasons: Road Repair and Winter. Optimists claim 5 seasons for the state by adding "Indian Summer" to the other four. It has also been said, if you don't like the weather, just wait five minutes and it will change (though this is said in many, many places). It's true that the prevailing westerly winds can quickly move changing weather systems across the relatively flat topography. The southwest part of the state is known for being windy.
Both Spring and Fall are beautiful times of year and are quite temperate, though Spring comes later, and Fall ends sooner, than other parts of the country. In the winter, when the 10,000 or more freshwater lakes freeze over, the whole state becomes like a magical icebox! Then, the most beautiful thing a person will ever see is when Spring puts an end to the harsh winter and all of the new plants and wildlife flourish!
