Below are a list of notes in the decreasing time values. Every note is worth half of the beats of the previous note: breve, semibreve, minim, crotchet, quaver, semiquaver, demisemiquaver, hemidemisimiquaver etc. The crotchet takes one beat in simple time signatures.
Semibreve: four beats
Minim: two beats
Crotchet: one beat
Quaver: half a beat
Semi-quaver: quarter of a beat
Any note with a dot to the right of it is increased by half of it's original value, e.g. a dotted minim is worth three beats and a dotted semibreve is worth six beats, whereas a dotted crotchet is worth one and a half beats.
Values change as the bottom number of the time signature changes but in common time:
whole note = 4 beats
dotted half note = 3 beats
half note = 2 beats
dotted quarter note = 1 1/2 beats
quarter note = 1 beat
eighth note = 1/2 beat
sixteenth note = 1/4 beat

a whole note is in fact 4 beats
Line notes or notes that you see on the staff lines where the line goes right through the note. Any other note can precede or follow a line note, for instance a quarter or half note.
The number of counts in a whole note is dependent on the time signature. If the bottom number is 4 (quarter) then the whole note gets 4 counts; if the bottom number is 2 (half) then the whole note get 2 counts; etc.
