The current list of "dwarf planets" (round bodies that orbit the Sun independently) includes, in order of their orbital distance :

  • Ceres (950 km in diameter and 1/3 of the total mass of the asteroid belt)
  • Pluto (2390 km in diameter and formerly the 9th solar planet)
  • Haumea (ellipsoid Kuiper Belt object about 1/3 Pluto's mass)
  • Makemake (about 1800 km in diameter and a bit farther out than Haumea)
  • Eris (at 2500 km in diameter and 1.27 the mass of Pluto, the largest discovered Kuiper object. With Dysnomia, its moon, it orbits the Sun once in 557 years.)

Candidates for dwarf planet status include Sedna, pending verification of its mass and shape. (Sedna's closest approach to the Sun is barely within the Kuiper Belt, and its orbit may extend to nearly 1000 AU, into the Oort Cloud of comets.) Other Kuiper Belt bodies include Quaoar, Orcus, and Varuna. Pluto's moon Charon, and the large asteroids Vesta, Pallas, and Hygiea are also listed as potential candidates for dwarf planet status.

There are currently 5 official dwarf planets:

  1. Ceres
  2. Pluto
  3. Haumea
  4. Makemake
  5. Eris

Ceres and Pluto are the only two dwarf planets that were once considered major planets.

Do outer planets have dwarf planets?

No. Planets do not have dwarf planets. A planet-sized object orbiting a larger planet is a moon. Dwarf planets orbit the sun independent of other objects.

Are dwarf planets and minor planets the samet hing?

Dwarf planets are celestial bodies that have enough mass to have a gravitational pull by the sun, but they are not large enough to be considered a regular planet. They are also too big to be satellites. Minor planets are in direct orbit with the sun. They are not dominant planets, and they are not comets. This qualifies all dwarf planets as minor planets. So, to answer your question, not exactly. All dwarf planets are minor planets. But not all minor planets are dwarf planets. Hope this helps you!!

Are dwarf planets round?

Yes. While not considered planets, dwarf planets are still massive enough to be rounded by their gravity.
