In most states the laws on MA weapons are pretty vague, but generally if they're used for exhibition and training it's not a problem. There are many dojos in Illinois that train with Kamas. However, if you use a real set (you can find a real set of actual kamas for cutting rice in any Asian market) to actually hurt someone and get caught, then it's a different story. It then becomes a weapon and not a exhibition / training device.
Unless you can show you were cutting rice in your Chi-town rice paddy when you accidentally cut the dude's arm off....
Kamas are a gray area because they serve a legitamate function, even if not cutting rice they're great for gardening too. How they're used is the usually the legal test. Some overtly MA weapons like nunchakus are illegal for anything but exhibition and training. Like kamas, it's one thing if you get stopped by Officer O'Malley and you've got your Gi and training gear and are obviously going to a tournament or your dojo for training. It's a different story if you get stopped on the street and you've got a set tucked in your waistband behind your back under your shirt.
Use common sense - though I know there are none in Illinois, try anyway and you should be okay.
