The Arc de Triomphe is the second-largest triumphal arch is existence, after a modern one built in North Korea. Its size, the fact that is is made out of white limestone, weighs nearly 100.000 tonnes ("metric tons" in US English), the view it offers on most Parisian landmarks such as the Louvre Palace, the Eiffel Tower or the Sacre-Coeur basilica make a lasting impression on you when you visit it.
Its history is very interesting. Among many facts the Arc is sheltering the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier between its feet. From the same side (Champs-Elysees avenue), you'll see the sculpture by Rude "the departure of the volunteers of '92". Nickamed "la Marseillaise", after the French national anthem, this is a piece of art that is nearly as known to the French than the Eiffel tower itself.
