How does quarrying affect people?

Quarries are bad for the environment in several ways. They abruptly interrupt the continuity of open space, ruining habitats for flora and fauna alike. They are eyesores. When they are near residential areas, they create a noise hazard because of blasts and heavy machinery. They also create air pollution, most notably dust.

On a positive note, they do provide materials which are used to make things which are vital to our infrastructure (roads, bridges, dams, seawalls, tunnels) and products which are in demand by consumers.

Whilst a quarry is in use the effects on the local environment are more than just the loss of wildlife habitats and the obvious visual impact. A working quarry needs methods of transportation and this means that large amounts of machinery and heavy traffic will be brought into the area, causing an increase in local noise, pollution and erosion.
