The parts of a stethoscope(distal to proximal) are:
1. Chest piece
2. Tubing
3. Ear tubes(binaural)
4. Ear pieces
5. (The most important part)

1. Chest piece:
Is applied to the chest. It consists of a diaphragm(for high pitched sounds) and a bell(for low pitched sounds) OR a just a diaphragm. The diaphragm is flat, about 5 cm(2 inches) in diameter. The other side has a bell, which is conical in shape, about 2.5cm(1 inch) in diameter. [can be compared to a microphone which receives sounds!!]

2. Tubing:
Is usually made of PVC, is about 45cm long and splits to attach to the two ear-tubes.

3. Ear tubes:
Two in number, usually made of steel, conduct and amplify the sounds transmitted by the tubing. sometimes has a spring in between to maintain shape and fit snugly over the ears.

4. Ear pieces:
Two in number, each attached to the ear tube on either side. Fits snugly in the ear. Can be hard or soft type.
(These must face forwards and medially - the direction of the external ear canal)

5. The Most Important Part! :
You might be wondering what else is left in the stethoscope, that too MOST IMPORTANT???
It's the part between the ears!!!!
Yes, the brain of the examiner. Without it having proper knowledge, a keen sense of observation, and the ability to deduce, it's impossible to assess what's happening beyond the chest-piece!!

Headset: The headset is the metal part of the stethoscope onto which the tubing is fitted. The headset is made up of the two eartubes, tension springs and the eartips.

Chest Piece: The chest piece is the part of the stethoscope that is placed on the location where the user wants to hear sound. Most cardiology stethoscopes contain a tunable diaphragm on each side of the chest piece. The large side can be used for adult patients, while the small side especially useful for pediatric or thin patients, around bandages and for carotid assessment.

Eartip: The eartips of a stethoscope fit into your ears. A good stethoscope will have eartips that offer comfort, seal and durability.

Eartube: The eartube is the part to which the eartips are attached.

Tunable Diaphragm: A traditional stethoscope consists of a bell and diaphraghm. The bell is used for light skin contact to hear low frequency sounds and the diaphragm is used with firm skin contact to hear high frequency sounds.

Stem: The stemp connects the stethoscope tubing to the chestpiece.

Tubing: All modern stethoscopes produced in last several years are latex free, they do not contain latex.
