- the country was united
- the issue of slavery was finally resolved
- after the war was over, the Union leaders had more experience and were stronger than before
Cons:
- A lot of American soldiers died[more than any other war]
- Policies were changed
- Southern economy was in ruins
- costed a lot of money to restore weapons and materials
- america was low on resources
