The USDA Basic Seven Food Guide (1943-1955) lists:
1. Milk
2. Vegetables
3. Fruit
4. Eggs
5. Meat, Cheese, Fish, Poultry
6. Cereal and Bread
7. Butter
The 7 groups of foods are grouped according to nutritive content. The 7 were first listed in 1942, then reduced to 4 in 1955. Later the USDA included 6 of them in its "food pyramid", which was modified in 2005 to stress 5 in greater value and 1 (fats) of lesser value.
