I cannot recommend that you rely upon your own judgment or evaluation to make this determination. You may suspect you have sleep apnea if you routinely suffer from daytime drowsiness or if you regularly wake up suddenly in a state approaching serious shock or terror during your sleeping time. Your physician will be able to direct you to an appropriate "sleep laboratory" where they will make a definitive and comprehensive determination of this or other possible sleep disorders.

Snoring is described by the NHS (UK National Health Service) as a sound made when asleep as you breathe through your nose and or mouth. It is caused when air does not move smoothly through your air ways, causing the vibration of tissue in your mouth, nose and throat due to the passage of air.

Snoring does not usually cause any problems for the person doing it. However there is a condition called Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) which causes interruptions in breathing during sleep and a common symptom of which is loud snoring. This interrupted sleep typically leads to the following symptoms:

  • feeling excessively sleepy during the day,
  • poor memory and concentration,
  • headaches; particularly in the morning,
  • irritability and short temper,
  • depression,
  • lack of interest in sex, and
  • in men, impotence (inability to get or maintain an erection).

There is some evidence to suggest that OSA may be linked to high blood pressure and in turn an increased risk of heart attack or stroke as well as the increased risk of being involved in a car or other accident due to sleep deprivation.

The UK National Health Service has a guide to the causes and symptoms of snoring and the more serious related condition Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.

If your snoring is excessively loud, then you may have sleep apnea, but you will want to check for other symptoms first. Waking up with a very sore or dry throat is one sign, and occasionally waking up with the feeling of choking or gasping can be a sign as well. If you feel that you may have sleep apnea, consult a doctor as they will be able to help treat your illness if you have it.
