Depends on what Furby you have, really. If you have a "First Generation Furby" (the 1998 versions), put two batteries in the battery compartment of the furby, making sure that the small round part of each battery is not facing the prongs in the battery compartment, and then slip two batteries into the compartment door.
For the 2012 Furbys, you should insert two batteries that should rest in the battery compartment, and put two more batteries ontop of the ones in the battery compartment in place.
For the 2005 Furbys, there is an illustration in the battery compartment showing how the batteries should be inserted.

∙ 10y agoThe Furby Boom toy requires 4 AA alkaline batteries, preferably Duracell according to Hasbro's FAQ on their website. You can replace the batteries if necessary later on by removing the plastic base.
