Depends on the language, however Madelines and Georges de Scudery published 1649 - 1653 in 10 volumes containes 2.1 million words. There there is Marcel Proust who wrote A La Recherche du Temps Perdu from 1913 has 1.5 million words. Followed by Mission Earth by L. Ron Hubbard has 1.4 million words. But the longest in any language is from Japan, Sohachi Yamaoka, a 40 volume historical novel contains over 10 million Japanese characters
