First of all, I'm so sorry for your loss. Perhaps my little bit of advice will help. We should NEVER ignore a summons! You didn't mention who the summons was from which indicates that you may be ignoring the initial notices and now have a court appearance. In that case, it will be up to a judge to decide. If you are still able to communicate with the hospitals and doctors, see if you can set up a payment plan with each, with no interest acrual. They know that most folks cannot pay these huge bills all at once. Pay something every month no matter what. If you don't have the exact amount due, send something and re-negotiate if you must. Check out social services at the hospital they are wonderful and are eager to help. Remember, don't ignore any bills. They would rather have something than nothing from you. Be calm and kind when speaking with them as well. Most of these people have never had to deal with the issues that you are dealing with, but they will someday. Take good care.
