Actually, her real name is Joanne Murray. She wrote under the pseudonym J.K because her publisher thought that the target audience (young boys) would be reluctant to read a book written by a woman. She legally has no middle name so she adopted the K. (for Kathleen) from her paternal grandmother.
Her parents to wanted her to become a secretary so she attended the University of Exeter beginning at age 18 (1983) and studied French. As part of her French program, she lived in Paris for a year. After college, she stayed in London and worked at several jobs, including at Amnesty International.
