The orbit of the Moon carries it between the Earth and the Sun. The 'apparent' size of the Moon and the Sun are almost exactly the same and so a small portion of the surface of the Earth can be in full shadow (the lunar umbra). a larger part of the surface of the Earth is in partial shadow (the lunar penumbra).
