In choosing and using his Generals, he showed a bad mixture of misjudgment and favouritism.
He was unable to control his cabinet.
He failed to keep up public morale. Instead of touring the country making emotive speeches, he stayed at home issuing dry legal statements about the correctness of secession, and later, desperate appeals for unity.
As a President, he was supposed to embody the soul and spirit of the Confederacy, bu it was Robert E. Lee who actually displayed the qualities of the noble Southern aristocrat and inspiring military leader.
