The quotation "All men are created equal" is arguably the best-known phrase in any of America's political documents.[1][2] Thomas Jefferson first used the phrase in the Declaration of Independence as a rebuttal to the going political theory of the day: the Divine Right of Kings. It was thereafter quoted or incorporated into speeches by a wide array of substantial figures in American political and social life.

In the 18th century when the Declaration of Independence was written, there was a Caste System throughout much of the world that established individual groups of people as part of a particular class. Jefferson meant that regardless of where one was in the caste system, they had equal rights. In today's society, however, "all men are created equal," pertains to race.

Jefferson meant that all men should be given the same opportunities. He did not mean that everyone should be given the same thing if they have not worked for them.
