God is holy and righteous and through out the history of mankind - as told in The Bible - God has demanded a sacrifice / death as the payment for sin (sin is separation from a relationship with God). Rom 6:23 The wages of sin is death.....
Jesus came and died on a cross as a sacrifice, suitable payment for all sin. Everybody who believes this has their sin forgiven and the gift of eternal life.
Rom 6:23........but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus.
1Jn 5:11 The testimony is this: God has given us eternal life, and this life has its source in his Son.
1Jn 5:12 Whoever has the Son has this life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
