What did Malachi set out to do?

Malachi set out to bring the people of Israel the warnings from God about the corruption and complacency that had set in. He warned against false worship, idolatry, divorce and hypocrisy that had corrupted Gods people. Malachi also brought God's promise to the people to encourage them and reminds them of the Messiah to come.

What we know about Malachi from The Bible is next to nothing. In critical circles it is denied that Malachi is a real person, but it is unreasonable to believe this as the name Malachi means, "My Messenger" and all of the other prophets, major and minor were real persons. He seems to have been contemporary with Ezra and Nehemiah. It is not strange to know very little about many of the prophets, who lived very long ago.

According to Jewish tradition, Malachi (together with others, especially Haggai and Zechariah) took part in instructing the people concerning the building of the Second Temple (Talmud, Zevachim 62a) and the laws of purity. He also was one of the leading members of the synod known as the Men of the Great Assembly, which (among other things) sealed the canon of the Hebrew Bible. Malachi taught Torah in close cooperation with Haggai and Zechariah; and the three are usually mentioned together in Jewish sources.
