very similar to how we do it today. Before there was electricity, a person would use a clothes iron (same shape as what we use today, except it was made of iron and had a wooden handle.) This was placed on the stove (usually wood or coal burning) to heat it up, then used as we use it today to get the wrinkles out of clothing.

Before the iron was invented people didn't press their clothes much. There were various presses that could be used, usually two boards held together with clamps. People also used to put their trousers under the mattress overnight if they didn't have an iron.

The earliest iron were heavy pieces of cast iron with a handle that could be warmed in the fire. Some also had a hollow in the top to hold burning coals to keep it warm.

How did women use to iron clothes?

Before electric irons, people used to have an iron with a handle at the top. The iron was hollow and a hole at the back allowed the user to pour hot water in, so that the iron was heated up. Alternatively the iron was placed on top of a stove to heat up before being used - I remember my grandmother using both these methods in Ireland.
