What are facts about acropolis?

One interesting thing is that during a war with the Turks, gunpowder was stored in the Parthenon (main temple on the acropolis, a temple to Athena). A canonball hit the gunpowder, which exploded and blew the roof off of the Parthenon. Another is that there used to be a giant gold statue to Athena and her small assistant god of victory, Nike (that's where the shoe company got its name).
