King Xerxes of Persia like many other Achaemenid kings had a long face and was quite tall. According to Zoroastrian principles of the day all kings had long dark colored curly hair and long beards. As under garments he wore a sudhreh and kusti. The sudhreh is a thin muslin shirt that has intricate seams and cutting due to specific religious premises. The kusti is a woolen rope made out of 72 strands representing the 72 chapters of the Yasna. Both are vested unto a Zoroastrian upon their initiation, or sudhreh pushi (navjote to the Parsees). On the out side Achaemenid royalty wore long silk kaftan-like robes with a cummerbund. As crowns they wore tall cylindrical gold pieces usually studded with gems. It was also common for Persian kings to hold a staff in their hand as a symbol of royalty.
