It was commonly thought that rats caused the disease. Some thought that the movement of the sun and the planets caused the problem. Some thought that God or the Devil was to blame. Invisible fumes breathed in and out was another cause.
Many people had many different reasons but a most common one was that it was god's punishment for all their wrong-doings and sins they had commited hope this helps...x
